Vaslisha Tor Dain is a mercenary starship captain with a few simple rules A good ship is better than a great man, in case of confusion always err on the side of blowing someone's head off, and never fall for a telepath or a member of her crew.

All of those are about to bite her in the ass.

Vas’s life takes a turn for the worse when she comes back to her crew after what should have been a two week pleasure trip to find out she’s actually been gone a month and has no memory of missing time. Her beloved ship, The Victorious Dead, has been sold for scrap and its pieces scattered throughout the galaxy. In addition, there are unmarked ships blowing apart entire planets and the Commonwealth government can’t, or won’t, stop them.

And that’s just her first day back.

Vas has to fight her crew, the Commonwealth, and a mysterious cadre of warrior monks to get her ship back and save a universe that may not want to be saved.

Warrior Wench The Asarlaí Wars Book 1 eBook Marie Andreas

The cover is both accurate and deceiving. This is a space epic with flawed, courageous people who deal with life and death in a moral manner -- slightly askew but on point. There is home, camaraderie, family, comic relief, mysteries (which the Captain cannot abide) romance, murder, plots and factions. My eyes kept wanting to skip paragraphs (I was that enthralled, that nervous). It starts with a bang and leads up to epic explosions! You will look for answers with the same tenacity as the Captain... but be warned, the answers are not always within reach or in time.

Warrior Wench The Asarlaí Wars Book 1 eBook Marie Andreas Reviews

I hadn't posted a review the first time I read this, but after re-reading it in preparation for reading the newest installment in the story, it's time.

I love space opera with a strong female lead, and Vas is that. In this book she ends up taking over a previous brothel ship when hers is destroyed, comes to grips with how she feels about the mercenary crew she heads, as well as the telepath who's her second in command. There's a little romance, but it's a very small part of the whole. It's mostly about uncovering a secret that has the potential to result in Vas and her crew's destruction.

Now I'm refreshed on the storyline and on to book 2!
Okay, I gotta admit, I liked this more than I'd anticipated. I have a love-hate relationship with sci-fi, so I'm always happy to find books with a good pace, layered plots, pronounceable names, and great, quirky characters. It doesn't always make sense from a technology or weapons aspect, but the story held my interest, regardless of some issues with the science. This one was a win on all fronts… I can't wait to read what happens next in Victorious Death.
I bought this book after getting hooked on the Lost Ancients series. I'm so glad the author decided to branch out with another series, and I loved this first book! It's fast paced and I always had to read "just one more chapter." It's the perfect bit of escapism -- space ships, space battles, and a lady space swashbuckler! Also, like in the Lost Ancient series, there's a wide range of odd-ball characters. I'm waiting for everybody to come back in the next book!
This is high action and adventure wrapped up in a mystery, fed by great characters and well written scenes. The Warrior Wench is their new ship, as well as describing their Captain. She's a spitfire, and is followed by as rowdy a crew of mercenaries as I have seen for a while. Their original ship (the Victorious Dead) has been stolen and dismembered, and they intend to get it back, and make the thieves pay on the way. Finding the parts takes them into some rough action, and the mystery of just who is behind the theft and why just gets more complicated . I barely put it down til I was done, and I have reread it once already, it's that good. I just found the second book in the trilogy, Victorious Dead, and I just set it up to start reading.
Marie Andreas is a TERRIFIC WRITER!! I am in love with the Lost Ancients book series and I just couldnt wait for the Warrior Wench!! (I am a CRAZY FAN of space opera) Well...the book is a TREASURE!!! It gots everything I want in a sc-fi; a badass multidimensional woman character, quirky dialogues ,a lot of action, romance, and a solid intriguing story line!! For me, this book is at the same level as Rachel Bach's Paradox trilogy!! Marie Andreas I cant wait for the next book in 'The Arsalai Wars'!!!!!!! <3 Thank you!!
A rollicking scifi adventure, there was plenty of action, including space battles (my favorite), humor, lots of different beings serving on a mercenary crew and a tough as nails with a heart of gold female captain. Capitan Vaslisha Tor Dain comes back from what was supposed to be a two week trip to find she’s been gone a month and has memories missing from that time, her ship, The Victorious Dead, has been broken up and sold in pieces all over the galaxy, and then there are the ominous ships attacking entire planets and several other mysterious happenings that make her believe someone is out to get her. She ends up with a replacement ship that was outfitted as a floating brothel called the Warrior Wench, but it may be just what she needs since it has some pretty sweet upgrades that come in handy during her adventures. Not as convenient is her sudden attraction to her second, the telepath Deven, which would break two of her rules no falling for telepaths or members of her crew. I thought the story ended somewhat abruptly, but it wasn’t really a cliffhanger, things were wrapped up as more of an ending of one adventure with more to come. It definitely made me want to pick up the next story to see what Vas and her crew get up to next.
I received an ARC of this book from the Publisher, via Netgalley, this does not affect my opinion of this book or the content of my review.

Yeah, I don't pick books that I think I WON'T like, but still, I found this book to be unexpectedly fantastic!

What we have here is a space epic adventure story with the humor and sense of ridiculous of Robert Aspiren's Phule's series with some of the epic galactic scope of Ann Aguirre's Sirantha Jax series. And while there is a hint of a romance, it is NOT a romance. And our heroine is a smart mouthed merc with a mysterious back story and unknown capabilities. In many ways Vas remind's me a bit of Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniels. It is nothing like a copy cat, don't get me wrong, and Vas has way more ties than Kate ever did, but there are just some parallels that caught my attention.

There are a couple of different mysteries swirling around, not all of which get resolved since it is a series, a cast of endearing and likable (if unlikely) heroes, and it is all wrapped up in writing that kept me hooked throughout.

It is fun, it is a romp, and I seriously think this series will be going somewhere in the future and will be avidly looking forward to the next book in the series. This is one book where I wish I could do better justice in my review because I really want to see this author find a market so the series will continue. And in that I am serious, serious enough to have bought it even though I got a free review copy, and anyone who knows me in real life knows what a miserly person I am.
